What Is a Financial Regulator (Like the FMA)?

Modified on Sat, 19 Apr at 2:35 AM

A financial regulator is a government authority that oversees financial markets, institutions, and service providers to ensure they operate legally, transparently, and responsibly. In the crypto space, regulators play a vital role in protecting investors and ensuring that platforms meet strict compliance standards.

Each country has its own financial regulator. For example, in Liechtenstein, it is the Financial Market Authority (FMA).

What does a financial regulator do?

  • Licensing: Grants operating licenses to banks, crypto companies, and other financial institutions
  • Supervision: Monitors whether regulated companies follow the law and comply with AML/KYC requirements
  • Enforcement: Can investigate, fine, or revoke licenses for misconduct or non-compliance
  • Consumer protection: Ensures that users are treated fairly and informed properly

The FMA Liechtenstein

The FMA Liechtenstein is the national financial regulator responsible for supervising banks, investment firms, insurance companies — and also crypto providers under the TVTG (Blockchain Act). The FMA works independently but is accountable to the Liechtenstein Parliament.

All crypto providers in Liechtenstein must register with the FMA to operate legally. The FMA checks their business models, compliance systems, risk controls, and customer protection standards.

Why it matters for crypto users

  • Using a regulated platform means more safety, transparency, and accountability
  • If something goes wrong, the regulator can act — including freezing assets or revoking licenses
  • It ensures that AML/KYC rules are followed and funds are not misused
